Scuba sites in Bali

If you want to have an incredible scuba diving and snorkeling experience then Bali is the place to go.

Bali is a popular diving destination because of it’s crystal-clear waters and stunning coral reefs, making for an unforgettable diving experience. Here are some of the best scuba diving spots in Bali for a world-class diving experience

Scuba diving in Padang Bai

Padang Bai is well-known among divers and snorkelers for its variety of challenging yet interesting reef formations. As a result, both beginners and advanced swimmers have access for something fun to explore. With all things considered, Padang Bai is an ideal place for snorkelers because of the shallow reefs and abundance of reef fish and turtles.

Scuba diving in Amed

Amed, located on Bali’s east coast, is known for its rich marine life, vibrant coral reefs, and abundance of tropical fish. In this case, Amed is an ideal destination for novice divers, experienced divers and enthusiastic snorkelers.

This up-and-coming fishing town is becoming a hot spot for the more discerning diver where every diving discipline is offered. Choose from scuba diving, free diving and technical diving for an unforgettable underwater experience.

With a string of shorelines and bays to explore, you will find crystal clear waters and hidden treasures beneath the sea. Amed’s vibe is based around diving, so with that in mind, if you are passionate about your diving this should be on your ‘places to go’ list.

Diving at Menjangan Island

Menjangan Island is part of the protected Bali Barat National Park, which is located in the north west part of Bali. This small island is home to a diverse array of marine life, including giant manta rays, reef sharks, moray eels, and numerous species of clownfish.

The dive site’s depth ranges from 8 to 30 meters. This makes it ideal for experienced divers or snorkelers looking to explore the ocean’s depths. As a result, stunning corals can be discovered around Menjangan Island with beautiful walls that stretch for miles.

Diving in Nusa Penida

Known as one of South East Asia’s top dive sites, which is located 45 mins by fast boat from Sanur. Nusa Penida offers some quite stunning views from its hilltops and cliff-sides.

The area has a variety of interesting routes that provide visitors with an intense yet rewarding experience that begins with spectacularly close-up sightings of sea turtles, manta rays, Mola molas, and various shark species.  Dive sites like Toyapaka and Ped are world renowned for their vibrant coral gardens and exotic marine life. Penida is more for advance divers and has some amazing drift dives.

Diving in Tulamben

Tulamben is famous for the Liberty shipwreck and is located on Bali’s east coast just past Amed.

The Liberty was originally a WWII shipwreck, however it has since become a popular scuba diving location due to its jaw-dropping abundance of corals and large schools of fish. Divers of all levels flock to this area of natural underwater beauty.

The ship rests from 12m’s down to 34m’s and when the visibility is ‘on’, it is unmistakable to work out the topography of the ship. You can even see where the bomb went off that inevitably sank the ship.

There are two large amphorae resting in shallow water (15m to 20m) that are definitely worth seeing. As well as some other interesting artifacts scattered around like rusted anchors and propellers.

The best diving resorts in Bali

Take a look at the websites below to discover some of the best resorts offering services for scuba diving in Bali.

Best season to go Scuba diving in Bali

Bali is one of the world’s top scuba diving destinations. The area’s diverse coral reefs, vibrant marine life, and warm tropical waters make it an ideal location for exploration.

Best time of year to visit?

The best time to go scuba diving in Bali is dependent on the type of experience you are looking for. The dry season (April-September) provides the most consistent conditions and visibility. These months are typically marked by calm seas and clear visibility, making them ideal for taking advantage of everything Bali has to offer underwater.

Scuba diving during the wet season

The wet season in Bali (October-March) can still provide excellent scuba opportunities in a variety of ways. Whilst visibility may be slightly lower than during the dry season, rains on land compensate with increased levels of plankton in the water. This means that the big boys come out to play so that Manta rays, sharks, whale sharks, Mola Molas, and sea turtles will be more common during these months.

If you don’t mind getting wet in order to see more wildlife, the wet season could be a great option for you. However, it is good to note that between the months of October to January, temperatures can drop to 18 degrees. The benefit of this is if you’re in the water in these temperatures, you’ll have a significantly better chance of seeing Mola molas.

Both the dry and wet seasons are fantastic times to dive in Bali. However, if you want consistent, reliable conditions with good visibility it is better to stick to the dry season (April-September).
